“They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation. Neither shall they learn war anymore.”
If you have been reading my posts for awhile, you know that TheOldManSays has written a significant number of posts related to how veterans can create and enjoy a income and lifestyle in the farming industry.
It is the belief that veterans can make measurable and sustainable contributions to their community, their family and themselves by using the skills they learned in the military and applying them to the job of farming. There are immediate tangible rewards to farming. In addition there are the rewards to the invisible injuries of war time service. There is the ability to lessen the impact of PTSD and other battlefield traumas. Some programs specifically target the integration of veterans suffering from PTSD and or brain injury; this is by design to enhance the overall treatment of these serious afflictions.
Here are a just a few of the occupations that are being taught under the umbrella of farming:
- animal husbandry
- farmers’ market
- CSA management (Community Supported Agriculture)
- pasture management
- greenhouse production
Programs across the country are helping veterans transition to a new, productive life working in food and agriculture.
TheOldManSays that it is the opinion of the Farmer Veteran Coalition that there is a viable path forward to integrate a significant number of the recent members of the military population who are leaving the service and seeking to integrate back into the world!
